One would expect to find the best Bún Chả Hà Nội in Hanoi itself, not in Saigon, and least of all in the Korean expatriate center of Phu My Hung. Nonetheless, we have here an unexplained mystery of the universe waiting to be discovered. I maintain that the best bowl of this northern specialty in the country is here, at Bún chả Ha Noi, in Phu My Hung. The restaurant is a small family-run affair that comes with the expected level of hospitality. For the uninitiated, Bún chả is a meat rissole and grilled pork soup served with vermicelli noodles (bun) and a basket of greens.

Anthony Bourdain and president Obama’s made it famous a few years back when the two of them met for lunch in Hanoi not long ago. Photos of these two titans towering over the tiny tables and chairs eating at this tiny Hanoi Locale went viral, putting this classic dish firmly on the South East Asian culinary map.
What makes the dish so special here is the grilled pork belly, the unbelievably good meat rissoles, and lastly the soup, which is somewhere between salty and juicy sweet. Even a small bowl is enough to sate the hunger of a full-grown adult. Koreans flock here, especially during lunch hours, but closes up early, so try to get there before seven if coming for dinner.
