Au Pagolac, which specialized in a beef tasting menu, 7 ways, is located in the heart of District 5’s Chinese neighborhood, in close vicinity of various dim sum restaurants. However the genre of food of Au Pagolac is lost in its uniqueness. One of the few Vietnamese restaurants with a completely home-made menu steeped in family history.

The story of Au Pagolac is fascinating:

On 20/4/1930, Mr.Adams Henri, a French citizen of Indian origin who went by the Vietnamese name of Nguyen Thanh Dam. Along with his wife, Huynh Thi Que, he opened a small restaurant in Tân Hiệp Market in Tiền Giang Province, with 7 dishes made from beef. This beef tasting menu he himself invented. Since then, the address of this idiosyncratic restaurant has changed various times, from Gò Vấp district in Saigon to Paris France, among others, finally coming to rest in their current address in District 5. Finally, the family tradition is now carried on by MR. Adams’ son: Mr. Huynh Thanh Son, who continues the secret family recipe of the 7 dishes beef tasting menu.

The tasting menu itself includes a creative variety of dishes. They will start you off with a plate of raw beef slices and tripe. They they serve this with a vinegar based broth which, once it starts to boil, you dip the meat sliced in to cook. After that these wrapped up in rice paper and herbs, and of course, dipped in fish sauce. They also have their own version of Bò nướng lá lốt, which is thicker and juicier than the usual Bò nướng lá lốt ( grilled beef wrapped in Betel leaves ) you will find at street stands. Finally, the servers will bring out a dish of cabbage wrapped beef and a Vietnamese style meatloaf to be eaten with crispy rice/coconut crackers.
